Ed Wilson-Shah

Ed is a hacker and technologist who has spent decades exploring how technology really works - and how it can be broken, fixed, and made safer. His work has helped shape the UK’s cybersecurity landscape at the highest levels. Ed was a founding member of the National Crime Agency’s PREVENT scheme (now part of Cyber Choices), helping to steer young people away from cybercrime and into positive, ethical careers.

As an ethical hacker, Ed has worked with banks, governments, and critical organisations around the world, helping them understand how real attackers think and how to defend against them. His career shows that curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving can lead to meaningful and impactful work in cybersecurity.

Step behind the screen and explore the hidden world that powers the internet. Ed will reveal the invisible networks all around us - the systems that allow your phone, games console, and laptop to talk to the rest of the world. You'll discover what really happens when you send a message, load a website, or connect to Wi-Fi.

Through live demonstrations and hands-on experiments your students can try at home, the session will break down the key building blocks of the internet: wireless networks, IP addresses, DNS, TLS, and TCP. Along the way, stories from Ed’s work as an ethical hacker will show how networks can be explored, tested, and sometimes even tricked - and how the internet protects itself.
